Property Tax Department

   Q.   Where are you located?

A.   Lyon County Courthouse, 206 S. Second Avenue, Rock Rapids, Iowa 51246

 

Q.   What hours are you open?

A.   All offices open at 8:00 a.m..  The Tax Office closes to the public at 4:30 p.m.      While the Motor Vehicle and Driver’s License close at 4:00 p.m..

QWhen do I receive a tax statement?

A.  Tax statements are usually mailed out the end of July or first part of August.  They are mailed to the titleholder of record or contract purchaser.

 

Q.   When are tax payments due?

A.   Your tax statement will have two stubs at the top to make payment.  You may pay the full year in the fall or choose to make two payments by the due dates.  FIRST HALF TAXES are due September 1st and become delinquent October 1st.  SECOND HALF TAXES ARE DUE March 1st and become delinquent April 1st.  The interest rate on delinquent taxes is 1 ½% per month rounded to the nearest whole dollar.  There is a minimum of $1.00.

 

Q.   I thought my mortgage company paid my taxes?

A.   The tax statements are required to be sent to the owner of the property.

 

Q.   Can I make a partial payment on my taxes?

A.   Yes, partial payments are accepted for current and delinquent taxes.  If paying delinquent taxes, the amount of the partial payment must be equal to or greater than the late interest and cost due.  Partial payments are not accepted for special assessments.  Tax sale redemptions and subsequent tax payments are not accepted on line.  Please contact the office to make these payments.

 

Q.   What happens if my taxes are not paid by the due date?

A.   On the first of each month, late interest at the rate of 1.5% per month (rounded to the nearest whole dollar with a minimum of $1.00) will be added to the unpaid balance of your property taxes.

A.   You may pay on line at www.iowatreasurers.org using Master Card, Visa, Discover Card or e-Check.  You may also pay by mail or in the office with cash, check, money order or Discover Card.

Q.   Where are you located?

A.   Lyon County Treasurer’s office is located at 206 S. Second Avenue in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

 

Q.    What hours are you open?

A.     We are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Monday through Friday.

 

Q.   What is your telephone number?

A.   The motor vehicle number is 712-472-3703.  Our telephone line is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..

 

Q.   I have lost my validation sticker or registration, where do I go to obtain a new one?

A.   If you live in Lyon County, you come to the Motor Vehicle Office in Rock Rapids.

 

Q.   What are my payment options?

A.   You may pay on line at www.getyourtags.com and use Master Card, Visa, Discover Card or use an e-Check.  You may also mail it to the office or come in and use either cash, check, money order or Discover Card.

 

Q.   What do I need to do to put my vehicle ion storage?

A.   You need to turn in the plates and registration before the vehicle becomes delinquent.  The fees then stop on that vehicle until it is taken out of storage.  At that time, the full year fees are due.

Q.   Where are you located

A.   The office is located at 206 S. Second Avenue in Rock Rapids, Iowa.

 

Q.   What are your hours?

A.   We are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  If you will be taking  a written test, please be in by 3:30 p.m. and if you need a driving test for a car, please be in by 3:00 p.m..  If you need a CDL driving test, call the office for an appointment.  The CDL driving test is done on the  2nd and 4th Mondays each month.
